Nearly one million seal pups have been clubbed or shot to death over
the last three years during the annual Canadian seal slaughter  And
it's about to start all over again at the end of March.

'I forced myself to watch as sealer after sealer smashed his
steel-tipped club into the faces of these beautiful creatures. It was
the most brutal sight I have ever seen....It was clear that the
sealers had scant regard for even the feeble regulations that exist.
They ran from one helpless seal to the next clubbing as many as they
could, ignoring the requirement to check to see if an animal was dead
before moving to the next. Many weren't and were left squirming in
agony.'

GREENPEACE.
Anyone who knows Greenpeace knows that we did, we still do, and we will
continue to, oppose the commercial Canadian seal slaughter.
Greenpeace was part of a movement that first actively campaigned
against commercial Canadian sealing between 1976 and 1983. Since that
time, we have
stepped back from the frontline as other groups such as the
International Fund for Animal Welfare, and other organisations, have
taken the lead in campaigning against the slaughter of seals.

However, our opposition to this hunt is remains firm and we are
actively supporting these organisations through web activism and
direct political lobbying.
We oppose any human activity harmful to populations of seals. We oppose
the killing of seals for commercial trade. We oppose TAKING ANIMALS
FROM ENDANGERED, THREATENED OR SERIOUSLY REDUCED POPULATIONS, from
populations whose status is unknown or where it is thought that such
takes may have an
adverse effect.
With the combined expanded hunt and the effects of climate change, the impacts
on the population are at best uncertain and by some predictions ARE IN
EXCESS OF A SUSTAINABLE BALANCE. The commercial hunt also negatively
impacts
the small hunt for adult seals conducted by the Inuit native populations, which
Greenpeace does not oppose provided they are sustainable, subsistence hunts.

Greenpeace supports the efforts of the International Fund for Animal
Welfare and other organisations that are taking action against the commercial
hunt for Harp and Hooded seals this year: we encourage our supporters
